Water Bugs Lunchtime Learning

Free Webinar Series

Topic:

Harmful Algae Blooms:

From Mitigation, to Detection, to Treatment

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

(No Credits Offered)

Presenter:

Nicole McLellan is a water treatment process specialist at Stantec with over 13 years experience related to the management of contaminants of concern and treatment optimization. She applies her background knowledge of biological systems and civil engineering to provide solutions to unique and complex challenges such as harmful algae blooms. Nicole has developed site-specific user-friendly models to estimate the removal of cyanotoxins to inform management decisions and regulatory compliance.

Topic:

The occurrence and magnitude of harmful algae blooms (HABs) is on the rise worldwide and they present a variety of threats to water users. This webinar will be useful for water managers to understand these bacteria that act like plants; recognize conditions that are favorable for their growth; and review mitigation approaches at the source and through drinking water treatment processes. This information will help decision-makers take a proactive approach to this emerging issue and ultimately improve public health protection.
