Direct potable reuse (DPR) is the planned introduction of recycled water either directly into a public water system or into a raw water supply immediately upstream of a water treatment plant. DPR has inherent risks that differ from treatment of traditional source waters and differ from conventional indirect potable reuse (IPR). This study evaluated the treatment performance of current IPR practices and considers what additional treatment, monitoring, and operational issues may be necessary to implement DPR. This presentation will discuss the research findings including a general framework under which risk can be evaluated using risk-reduction principles and how case studies illustrating these principles can be applied to real-world sites.
